Canberra Royal Show 2009 - Judge M/s Dianne Newberry

As can be seen from our picture here, we had some success at Canberra Royal with our gelding Silverthorn Rookie who won and went on to be reserve champion ASH gelding. Rookie also placed in his ridden class which was very pleasing since this was his first outing under saddle (more information about this lovely gelding on our Sale Page).

We were also fortunate enough to pick up placings in ridden classes with St Ronan Abdul Smoke and Silverthorn My Girl.

We travelled over to the Landmark Classic Campdraft Sale at the new Equine Centre in Tamworth and were duly impressed with all that we saw there. What a place! As you will see from the photos here it is truly a wonderful venue.

Whilst there we purchased a very nice four-year-old, 15hh, grey Acres Destiny Colt (ASHS registered) named Cunnoo Destinys Blueprint. "Blue" is a lovely natured, very laid back individual who we feel will make a lovely sire. We are very pleased with our buy and are looking forward to getting him to a few shows.

Morisset Lake Macquarie Show - 31st January, 2009 - Judge, Mr Bruce Withers

The day promised to be another hot one and we were lucky enough to find ourselves a nice shady tree under which to park and at least find some relief as the day wore on. It was a huge day and with every parking spot taken up people were just having to park wherever they could find a space. The stock horse ring, once again, was well represented and to be in the ribbons competitors really had to step up.

In the led ring we had our three-year-old filly Silverthorn Elliette winning her class, and Silverthorn My Girl who won her class in a huge field of mares 15hh and under and then went on to take out reserve champion mare/filly.

With Elizabeth in the saddle, Elliette placed second in the hack 3 years and under and second in working 3 years and under.

My Girl placed second in the mare hack and third in the working mare.

Our three-year-old colt Silverthorn Shotgun had a wonderful day in the ridden ring with firsts in hack 3 years and under, stallion hack, working 3 years and under, novice working and working stallion; and a third in the novice hack.

It should be noted that we don't show Shotgun in led classes since a serious injury as a yearling that left him with a mark on his fetlock.

Bundarra Show, January 31, 2009

Mark and Tania Alderton had a very successful day at Bundarra Show with their team of three mares. In this group was Silverthorn Calleen on her first ridden outing.

Calleen placed third in her led class and novice ridden; and then won open ridden mare. A terrific result for this young mare.

Pictured (below) is Tania riding Silverthorn Calleen, on Calleen's first outing.

January 24 - Hunter Valley Twilight Show - Judge, Belinda Selep

Above and below right: Paul riding Silverthorn Shotgun.

In extreme heat we attended the Hunter Valley Twilight Show at Alexander Park, Salt Ash near Raymond Terrace where the feature ring was Australian Stock Horses. This is our first time on these grounds and we found them to be very pleasant despite the heat, with plenty of shady trees and good facilities. The show committee did a great job keeping three rings running smoothly all day.

With us today we had Silverthorn Shotgun and Silverthorn Elliette mainly for the three year old classes, and Silverthorn My Girl for the open events.

April and Elizabeth had several age classes (18 years und under 21 years) and in these April received a first and reserve champion for ASH Handler under 21 years, and Elizabeth received a second. In the girls' ASHLA event Elizabeth took out first on Elliette, with April on My Girl for a second.

Elliette placed second in her led class, second in her novice ASH hack, first in hack under 4 years, second in mare hack, second in working under four years. A good result for this three year old filly.

My Girl placed third in the mare hack, won her mare working and took out reserve champion working.

Shotgun had a terrific day too, winning novice hack, second in the hack under four years, second in the stallion hack, first in the working under four years, first in working stallion and finally champion working.

A storm was brewing during the latter part of the show and it finally caught us during our final event. Although severe, it was a relief to get cooled down after such an oppressive hot day.

Summer School Holidays

It's always nice to have young people visit us during their time off school.

We've had quite a few training sessions during the holidays and its very rewarding to see the results these keen young riders are achieving.

Silverthorn Sashay

Just to let those interested in our "For Sale" page that we have an updated video of Silverthorn Sashay, ridden by Elizabeth, working out on the flat down by the Gloucester River.

We thought it worth taking another video as the previous indoor workout was a little dark.

It is interesting to see how quickly the youngsters progress in their training (especially allowing for time off over the Xmas break).

Sunday, January 18 - Hunter Valley Cutting Horse Club at Belltrees Station

Above: Pictured is Paul on Silverthorn Elliette.

Straight on the heels of an early morning start yesterday for Singleton Youth Show again we were up before dawn to head off over the Dingo Gate at Barrington Tops to Belltrees Station that is situated near Scone. At Belltrees they breed Thoroughbreds with Australian Stock Horses to produce some of Australia's finest polo ponies. The White family, the owners of Belltrees, have been raising horses for over 100 years.

We met up with the Hunter Valley Cutting Horse Club there for a cutting training day where Belltrees allow them the use of cattle and their arena. It was a very enjoyable and relaxed day with Paul introducing Elliette and Rookie to cutting. The club members made us feel very welcome and were happy to instruct and encourage in any way they could.

It was a fairly hot day and whilst Paul spent most of his time out in the dust and sun - apart from strapping for him - Julie, April and Elizabeth were quite content to sit in the shade and watch the proceedings from there.

Eastern Branch ASHS NSW Youth Show, Singleton - 17th January, 2009

The Eastern Branch of the ASHS held their annual camp and youth show at Singleton Showground in mostly sweltering summer conditions - after a week of very hot days it was a relief for the young participants and parents alike to have cooler days for their show and campdraft.

Julie was invited over for one of the instruction days to demonstrate preparation and presentation for the show ring. There were a couple of sceptics initially, but at the end of the day they'd been won over when they saw what could be achieved. "Rub it on, rub it off" was stressed to all who attempted having a go with the make-up, and the results were amazing. The range of colour covers available for different coloured horses clearly piqued these young people's interest which resulted in long sessions of trying their hand on their own horses after the demonstration. Many questions were asked pertaining to the covering up scars or marks, tail care, coat care etc.

Elizabeth McKelvey and April Spriggs both expressed a desire to compete in the 18 and under 21 years events at the NSW Youth Show on the Saturday, so it was back over to Singleton with the sister mares Silverthorn My Girl and Silverthorn Elliette.

Above: April with Girl in the handler class and on Girl starting out in the working section of the challenge.

It was very pleasing to see three other Silverthorn horses at the camp and show - the two three-year-olds, Durallie owned by Kayla Robinson-Bard and Walkout owned by Brittany Hetherington; and Montane owned by Annie Sherlock. It was Kayla and Durallie's first outing together and we were delighted watch them placed in their turnout class and for Kayla to win an Encouragement Award at the end of the show.

Above: Kayla on Durallie placed fourth in their stockman's turnout class.

In the 18 & under 21 years events Elizabeth and April were placed much of the day in most events with some very pleasing results. In the junior judging Elizabeth took out first place and April second; in the handler class April first and reserve champion and Elizabeth taking out fifth place.

Above: Elizabeth and Elliette in the working class.

In the rider class Elizabeth took out second and April fourth; in the hack class Elizabeth second and April third; in the working class April second and Elizabeth fifth; and lastly in the turnout class, April first and Elizabeth third.

For the challenge, April placed fourth overall with a third in the hack and a fourth in the time trial. Elizabeth placed second in the hack and third in the working.

The committee of the Eastern Branch should be congratulated on such a well run and successful week.

Silverthorn Montane

To see the pleasure our horses give it makes the long process of breeding worthwhile.

Pictured here is Annie Sherlock from the Central Coast, on her gelding Silverthorn Montane at a recent jamboree where Annie won champion 12-year-old. Annie and Monte are at present excelling in jumping and dressage and are now training for their first cross country event.

We feel sure that we are going to see a lot more of this great combination.

Montane is from the lovely palomino mare Silverthorn Chanteuse, and by Montcalm Luke.
