Silverthorn Horsemanship Clinic - 29th and 30th of June, 2013

While rain had been lashing down all up and down the coast as well as giving Sydney it's fair share, we did receive some rain but not enough to deter us from running our horsemanship clinic last weekend. The clinic went really well, despite some on and off rain that drove us to our undercover arenas allowing us to continue without losing any precious instruction time.

As ever, we had a really nice social time which always highlights our weekends during refreshment breaks, lunches, and Saturday night dinner. Standing round the campfires or heaters always draws conversation, recollections and stories. It never ceases to amaze us the cross-section of people from all walks of life who come together through the love of horses.

So nice too to watch the improvement in riders and horses over the two days - makes you realise that the effort really is a worthwhile venture.

Thank you Kylie, Mick and Tiff for coming along and lending assistance to Paul, Brittany and Ashley on the Sunday - very much appreciated by all.

23rd June, 2013

Just past our shortest day - winter's supposed to be here but we're still experiencing lovely weather. We did have a couple of days of cold wind coming from the direction of Barrington Tops and thought perhaps the snow may soon start falling up there.

We've been weaning our cattle and doing general stockwork - a great opportunity to get our young horses used to a proper day's work. Pictured here are Paige Whiting riding two-year-old gelding Silverthorn Oakwood (Crillee Amarillo Oak x Barsham Sunlast; Ashley on three-year-old filly Cee Dee Copycat (Whos Top Cat x Cee Dee Celeste); and Paul with three-year-old filly Silverthorn Violette (St Ronan Abdul Smoke x Silverthorn Juliet.

Another beautiful two-year-old filly is about to leave our sale page after having been purchased by Glenn Brissett of Kangaroo Valley - Silverthorn Allonia Oak (Crillee Amarillo Oak x Scotts Creek Bauble). Allonia is another one by "Freckles" that has impressed us with her cool and calm acceptance to whatever is asked of her. Allonia is pictured here with her new owner Glenn Brissett with Paul.

We have quite a few quality two and three-year-olds in for breaking-in and hopefully we'll have them on our sale page soon.

This week and next we have Sarah Hardes doing work experience with us. Sarah is a very experienced young rider and her help here is very much appreciated.

Ashley is pictured here with Julie's two-year-old Australian Pony Amaranda Joyfull on her second ride - Ashley is doing all the work with this pony and we are looking forward to "Pony" coming out under saddle this spring. It should be noted here that we are breaking-in and training all breeds of horses, big and small, short and tall as part of our breaking-in and training enterprise. Charge per week is $330 (GST included). All are rugged, stabled and fed twice daily.

9th June, 2013

Joe Lawrence took his yearling chestnut gelding, Silverthorn Oaks Adair (Crillee Amarillo Oak x Silverthorn Eclipse), to his first show, the Foal and Youngstock Show at Cowra/Young, NSW last week. Despite the wet weather conditions, the day went well with "Dare" winning his ASH Yearling Gelding class and going on to take out Reserve Champion ASH Yearling and placing second in ANSA Yearling. This is one of the first of Crillee Amarillo Oak's ASH progeny to be shown in the stock horse ring. Joe tells us that Dare took the whole experience in his stride - congratulations Joe on your success. We are very pleased with the stock being produced by "Freckles" - so much so that we are planning on using him over more of our mares this breeding season.

Joe rode young Ainsley McGrath's three-year-old Shotgun gelding Burrenview Doubleshot (Silverthorn Shotgun x Kindred Stud Music Time) at this show, also with great success, winning both ASH ridden and ASH working classes.

Pictured here is Erin Bell (below left) on her newly purchased three-year-old filly Silverthorn Coolabah Star (Waikon Park Coolabah x Barsham Greer) with Joe Lawrence. We look forward to hearing of Erin's progress with Star.

Brooke Joyner and her four-year-old gelding Silverthorn Newsflash came home loaded with trophies after a week's competition at the 20th High School Equestrian Expo at Coonabarabran. More than 700 horses and 600 riders were in Coonabarabran last week competing in Australia's oldest and biggest high school equestrian expo. Over five days the students took part in a range of events including show jumping, dressage, polocrosse and a new stockman's challenge. Well done Brooke - we're proud of both you and "Flash".

1st June, 2013

Well it's the first day of winter today - still pleasant days although a drop of rain would be nice. Our winter pasture is all in and after some rain last week, is starting to appear and looking promising.

On our return home from the ASHS National Show we've hit the ground running with new horses in for training and breaking-in as well as our own youngsters coming in for breaking-in.

We enjoyed having Tocal student Carly Meyer here for hands on work experience and feel sure that she would have gone back to the college with a good feel of what it's like working on a breaking-in and training facility. Carly is pictured here assisting with breaker Silverthorn Sweet Talk, a three-year-old filly by St Ronan Abdul Smoke and from Barsham Sunaround.

We recently heard from Monique Hewett with news of her progress with Silverthorn Gideon, a full brother to Sweet Talk mentioned above. Monique has been taking Gideon to different clinics - pictured is Monique on Gideon at a recent campdraft clinic.

Three young horses featured on our sale page have recently been sold - Sweet Charity, Cattle Call, and Sweeney. During the handling, breaking-in and training process we get really fond of these youngsters, and at times it's hard to watch them driving out the gate with their new owners. But this is what we do, and at least we know we've done the best we can to make sure they are placed in suitable homes.
