Horsemanship Clinic at Buchan, Victoria - 12th, 13th and 14th of July, 2013

Well, it was a round trip of 2,000km to Buchan, Victoria and return. Our travellers Paul, Brittany and Ashley took three of our horses with them having a wonderful time, seeing new countryside and meeting some wonderful people. Jo and Geordie Akeroyd of Tambeau Australian Stock Horses organised for the Buchan Pony Club and ASHS members to get together for one of Paul's clinics at the Buchan Rodeo Ground.

The first day was devoted to children with days two and three concentrating on the adults. Overall, the riders attending proved to be a very capable group of people who were keen to nail their flying changes and any other area of expertise that needed reinforcement. The children were a delight, and with their supreme confidence, were really easy to teach.

The venture was such a success that we will be returning the first week of October for a four day clinic. This will be achieved on the trip where we will first be competing at Melbourne Royal Show, and then the ASHS Youth Nationals at Holbrook, NSW - then back down to Buchan, Vic.

Whilst Paul, Brittany and Ashley were away on the road and coaching in Victoria last week, Silverthorn horses and their owners were enjoying success in their own right at various events.

Attending the Riverina Branch ASHS Camp and Show Ainsley McGrath on her three-year-old gelding Burrenview Doubleshot (Silverthorn Shotgun x Kindred Stud Music Time) took out Champion Hack - Junior under 13 years. Ainsley and "Duke" placed well in many other events also. Interesting to watch this combination over the coming years.

In the Associate events Joe Lawrence enjoyed success in the challenge on his three-year-old filly Silverthorn Sugar Glider (Waikon Park Coolabah x Barsham Sunrising) winning the time trial section, second in the hack, and second in the working, finishing second overall. Well done Joe and "Possum".

In the midst of our programme of breaking-in and training we have had several young people here staying with us during the school holidays. They are all so eager and keen to learn - it's so refreshing and energising to have them here with all their questions and the want to ride like our trainees Brittany and Ashley. Sarah Hardes, Rowan Stephens, and granddaughter Lilly Findley all spent hours in the saddle and at the end of a shovel, as well as filling hay bags during their stay here. Sarah and Rowan also had the opportunity to handle some young horses in for breaking-in.

Right: Lilly on Silverthorn Imogen (Silverthorn Eclipse x Waikon Park Coolabah) with Brittany giving instruction.

Below: Ashley on filly Silverthorn Sweet Talk (Barsham Sunaround x St Ronan Abdul Smoke) with Rowan on Silverthorn Wallaroo (Silverthorn Danni Girl x Silverthorn Easy Acres), with Brittany in the foreground. Both these young horses are now on our sale page.

We recently had our Warrenbri Romeo stallion Knights Jugaby gelded. Jugaby is recovered now after his surgery and is being prepared for the coming show season. We are really looking forward to having him on our show team again. Jugaby always was, and is, a favourite here with all of us - a superb horse who will most certainly make his presence felt this spring in his new status. In his everyday work as a lead horse with breakers, he is an invaluable asset with his strength and kind nature.

Our mares start foaling soon and we are looking forward to the excitement of new foals on the ground. It won't be long before we'll have new foal photos on our Youngsters' page.

We leave our foals with their mothers as long as we can, depending on the season and the condition of the mares - this season has been good to us and we are only just weaning our 2012 foals. Pictured right is Silverthorn Man O War (Cee Dee Destiny x Conductor) - a colt that we are planning to show as a yearling this coming show season.

After eight years away, Silverthorn Anna Louise (Elle Astra x Montcalm Luke), has just returned to join our broodmares. After the long road trip from South Australia she is settling in well and we are looking forward to breeding with her this season. She ranks with her two full sisters Eclipse and Madalyn - two mares that we esteem very highly and who produce some of our very best foals. Another Montcalm Luke mare too - we have found the Luke mares to be great producing mares, and are so pleased to have her home - thank you Catherine Bayliss for this great opportunity.

The planned horsemanship clinic last week at Glenthompson, Victoria was cancelled due to road and weather conditions but the East Gippsland clinic at Granite Rock, Victoria is going ahead with Paul and the girls, Brittany and Ashley, about to head off for the long road trip for their next adventure to see new country, and meet new people. After that, there is a clinic at Armidale in September. We'll be setting a date for our next Silverthorn Clinic soon - watch this page for details.
