ASHS National Youth Show 2013

After having shown at the Melbourne Royal Show on the Monday, Paul and the girls drove on up to Holbrook, NSW on the Tuesday, setting up camp and preparing for the National Youth Show to be held on 27th and 29th of September. After our very dry spring, they found themselves literally in clover where Holbrook and the surrounding countryside have been enjoying good rain and a very green spring. They turned the horses out in the campdraft yards for a rest, and with heads down and tails swishing contentedly, had a pick of very welcome lush green feed. The girls, meantime, got to work on polishing their gear for the competition ahead.

The grounds were more than adequate, and with good amenities. We all knew that there was no power available so with generators at most campsites, everyone was able to run power to their own trucks or floats.

Under judges Bronwyn Parker, and Julie and Bill Peadon we did have an excellent show, with the following results:

Brittany on Knights Jugaby in age group 18 and under 21:

2nd Youth Judging; 1st ASHLA; 1st Hack; Reserve Champion Juvenile Hack; 1st Handler; Reserve Champion Handler; 5th working; 2nd Pleasure; in the Challenge 1st in the Hack, 1st in the Working - 2nd Overall in the Challenge. 2nd Campdraft; 2nd Station Horse.

Ashley on Silverthorn My Girl in age group 13 and under 18:

1st ASHLA; 1st Rider; Reserve Champion Juvenile Rider; 1st Hack; Champion Juvenile Hack; SUPREME HACK; 1st Handler; Champion Handler; 1st Pleasure; in the Challenge 2nd in the Hack, 5th in the working, 2nd in the time trial, 1st in the Campdraft - 2nd Overall in the Challenge. Equal 2nd in Dressage Novice 2D.

Our sincere thanks to the generosity of sponsors with prizes for every event and to the tireless organisers for a great and memorable show.

Melbourne Royal Show - 21st September, 2013

Our trip to Melbourne, Victoria, for the Melbourne Royal Horses in Action Show, proved to be very successful and worthwhile. Paul, Brittany and Ashley took Silverthorn My Girl, Knights Jugaby, and the three-year-old filly Silverthorn Guns and Roses for this long journey to throw our hat in for an interstate Royal Show that we have never attended before. We found the Melbourne Showground to be adequate enough, although a lot of walking from the campsite to the stables and main ring certainly took its toll. There were no led classes, just ridden - every single horse had to be ridden, and nobody was even allowed to go on foot to lead a horse to a competitor. The horse office, stewards and organisers were all very helpful in every aspect of our stay, making this a pleasant and memorable show. Competition was strong and classes were well attended.

Under judge Bruce Moxey, Silverthorn My Girl, ridden by Ashley, won ASH Mare Hack under 15hh, and ASH Ridden by a Junior 17 years and Under; then Champion ASH Hack. They then placed first in Working Mare and second in Youth Working; then Champion Australian Working Horse, Best Junior ASHLA, and overall ASHLA; and won the ASH Open Time Trial (by one second) - what a show for these two! This is going to be one of those highlights of Ashley and My Girl's lives that will be with them forever.

Brittany also had a hugely successful show with Knights Jugaby and Silverthorn Guns and Roses. On Jugaby she won Best Senior ASHLA, and runner-up ASHLA overall to Ashley on My Girl; placed fourth in Hack Gelding over 15hh; fourth in Working Male; fourth in the time trial; and third in the ASH Open Station/Utility Horse. Then on Guns and Roses, the three-year-old filly, took out first place in the ASH Hack Colt, Filly or Gelding, 3 years old and under; and won the ASH Open Station/Utility Horse - this filly is an exciting new addition to our show team, who takes the place of her sire Silverthorn Shotgun, who is now retired to stud.

Gloucester Branch ASHS Day Clinic - 15th September, 2013

Despite the dry conditions, it was lovely warm spring weather in which Gloucester Branch ASHS ran a training day at the Gloucester Showground last Sunday.

Paul found riders were keen to learn and they were delighted when their horses responded so well to some handy tips and ideas.

The hard working committee members and their helpers prepared a barbecue lunch that was appreciated by all, and it was nice for us all to sit for a while to enjoy one another's company.

Pictured here are some shots taken on the day:

NSW State Youth Show - 7th September, 2013

Last weekend we attended the 2013 NSW State Youth Show hosted by the Far North Coast (NSW) Branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society at Hawthorne Park Grounds, Grafton.

With dry and dusty weather conditions prevailing, the very competitive youth riders attending were not deterred and rode to win in each and every event on the very extensive programme scheduled over the weekend from junior judging, rider and working classes, challenges, sporting and campdrafts.

Brittany and Ashley had a very enjoyable and successful weekend.

Brittany rode Knights Jugaby for many high placings as well as winning in her age group, ASHLA, dressage 1A, 1st campdraft, champion handler, 1st overall hack challenge, and 1st overall challenge.

Ashley rode Silverthorn My Girl, with many high placings also, winning in her age group, reserve champion rider, reserve champion hack, 1st campdraft, and 1st overall challenge.

Ashley had a very good round in the show jumping. and both girls had fun and high placings in the sporting events.

It gave us great pleasure to see geldings Silverthorn Lucky Strike and Silverthorn Wills owned by the Fangmeier family from Yarrowyck, enjoying a successful weekend also.
