Paul with yearling colt Tarraway Jackson - Champion Yearling ASH

129th Annual Wingham Show - 29th March, 2014

Ashley on Easy Acres in the gelding working class

Wingham is a really good little show with an excellent working committee who go out of their way to make sure it runs smoothly. What a great effort for Wingham for their show to have been running 129 years! Fortunately the rides and side-shows are away from the main arena, but close enough to go and have a look around at produce, exhibits and displays, and then on to the cattle being exhibited. The day was fine with the main arena tending to be very soft but not so bad as to be muddy after rain in recent days..

In the stock horse ring under judge M/s Katrina Adams classes were mixed, with stallions, colts, youngstock and breeders' groups poorly represented, but mares and gelding classes very strong and competitive.

We gave our yearling colt Tarraway Jackson another outing coming away with a first in his colt class and then Champion Yearling ASH.

Ashley showed the gelding Silverthorn Easy Acres for a second in the led ASH gelding under 15hh; and under saddle placed third in ASH gelding hack, and second in ASHLA and station horse.

Ashley and Silverthorn My Girl

A lot of people call this Nabiac Show since the showground is situated there. This is their 102nd Annual Show - such a long time - one could bet that there are many wonderful tales to be told of great horsemanship feats over those hundred and two years!

What a great little country show this is - bustling and full of atmosphere, and besides the usual horse rings, one can wander over to watch cattle judging, and then on to the dog judging area where so many breeds of dogs can be seen.

With the rides swirling up and down and round and round, and the vintage pumps and machinery banging and wheezing, it was challenging to say the least with all the ruckus around them, to keep many of the horses focussed on the job at hand.

For such a seemingly out of the way area, there must have been hundreds of people out enjoying the day with their families, checking out the rides, demonstrations, ring events and sideshows.

The grand parade of horses and cattle drew a huge crowd and it was certainly a sight to behold to watch so many beautiful animals colourfully decorated with their ribbons and sashes being paraded.

Our day started in the galloway ring where Silverthorn My Girl won her led mare class and went on to be sashed reserve champion galloway. In the ANSA ring My Girl won mare 4 years and over.

Under judge Kim Moy, our newly purchased yearling colt Tarraway Jackson had his first outing here taking out first in ASH yearling colt, and then on to be sashed champion stallion/colt. We were really pleased with his performance and are looking forward to taking him to the coming Wingham and Gloucester Shows.

Silverthorn Easy Acres won his led gelding 4yrs and over, not exceeding 15hh and was later sashed reserve champion ASH gelding. In his ridden classes Ashley won ASHLA senior; ASH gelding hack, and reserve champion ASH hack, then a second in ASH working gelding.

Silverthorn My Girl had a good day in the stock horse ring with a first in led ASH mare 4yrs and over; champion ASH mare/filly; and finally Supreme Led ASH of the show winning the Paterson Family trophy. Our thanks to the Paterson Family for their generous sponsorship. Girl also won ASH mare hack and then on to be Champion ASH Hack.

Looking down on just a few of the parading participants of the snaffle bit futurity

What a huge gathering of horses and competitors this has become! With well over 700 catalogued horses on the ground and with most classes requiring two, three and four cuts off the ring before judging even began, one wonders, logistically speaking, how horses and riders can possibly be getting a fair go at getting even a call-in. In saying this however, there are always the outstanding horses and riders who shine, and they are the ones that are there when it comes to the final cut.

We had a good show with Ashley riding Silverthorn My Girl for firsts in Hack Mare 5 years and over - English Attire, Hack Mare 5 years and over not exceeding 15hh and then took out Champion Mare Hack.

Silverthorn Oakwood did well placing 3rd in Pleasure Hack Gelding 3 years and under in a class of 26 with Holly Clayden in the saddle; then Ashley rode him for a fourth in Working Gelding three years old in a class of 30.

Silverthorn Easy Acres, shown by Ashley placed sixth in Led gelding 5 years and over, not exceeding 15hh in a class of 21 geldings; fourth in Hack Gelding 5 years and over, not exceeding 15hh (23 entries); and fourth in Station Horse gelding 5 years and over (48 entries).

Two-year-old Silverthorn Sheoak rode by Brittany fared well in the Tambeau Snaffle Bit Futurity placing third in the led section and was 10th overall (79 entries).

We saw other Silverthorn horses at the show - S.Wills, S Lucky Strike, S Avril, S Spyker, S Son of a Gun, and S Gunsmoke - all doing well for their owners and riders.

The Fountain of Youth Sale featured 80 quality yearlings and two-year-olds - a very disappointing sale for vendors with prices down on last year's sale, but for those who did purchase, it was a buyers market.

We we were fortunate enough to have the winning bid on the top priced colt of the sale. Tarraway Jackson is an outstanding 17 month old brown colt by Clarke Family Review and from Kirkby's Stud Olivia. With true heritage bred stock horse bloodlines on the top and bottom of his pedigree we feel he will make a positive impact on our breeding programme. By purchasing this beautiful colt we are now eligible for incentives offered to FOY sale horses for National Shows 2015, and 2016.

Autumn's here at last - so looking forward to this after such a hot dry summer. We've received some beautiful rain and already the countryside is looking green. With rainfall received over the last couple of days the gullies are starting to run and waterholes are filling. Hope everyone else is getting their fair share too.

So pleased to hear that Ainsley McGrath and her four-year-old Shotgun gelding Burrenview Doubleshot made their mark at Boorowa Show over the weekend taking out Champion Led ASH Gelding, and Supreme Led ASH. First in Handler Under 13 years, second in Ridden Under 13 years, third in Open Hack Under 15hh, first in Working Under 13 years, and Reserve Champion Ridden ASH Under 13 years - congratulations Ainsley, well done.

Took these two photos this week of two geldings by our late sire St Ronan Abdul Smoke. Smoke has certainly left his mark with the beautiful line of stock he has left behind - lovely bodies, good legs, sweet heads, and kind dispositions. We have retained black fillies by this horse and look forward to breeding them to selected sires in our breeding programme.

We are currently offering for sale Silverthorn Sweet Talk, a four-year-old brown mare by St Ronan Abdul Smoke. She's in foal to Silverthorn Shotgun and on our sale page. A fantastic opportunity for someone wishing to breed a quality heritage stock horse for the future.

2014 Canberra Royal Show - Judge Brett Welsh

Back down the highway again, this time to 2014 Canberra Royal Show.

It's no wonder that this show has such huge entries - the show committee and staff are always friendly and helpful, the ground always well prepared, camping facilities are good and stabling very adequate. After such a long dry spell, everyone were happy enough to put up with the torrential rains that struck the day before the show began. Quite a few stables were washed out but nobody was complaining about the wet - the consensus was that anything's better than the dry!

On day one our first success was when Brittany led the three-year-old Shotgun filly Silverthorn Guns and Ross in a class of 13 fillies for a first ribbon. Then later on in the day both Brittany on Guns and Roses, and Ashley on the three-year-old gelding Silverthorn Oakwood placed first and second respectively in a huge class of 30 in the ASH Hack any sex - under four years.

Both girls then placed well from a group of 16 young junior judges, with Ashley placing first and Brittany coming third - well done girls, so proud of you both.

Day two saw Ashley on Silverthorn My Girl take out first place from 24 entries in the Mare Hack four years and over to be ridden in snaffle bit, and then another first out of 21 entries in the ASH Hack, not exceeding 15hh to be ridden in a curb bit.

Brittany on Guns and Roses placed fifth in the ASH hack over 15hh to be ridden in a curb bit out of 29 horses, nice result for such a young filly.

It was very pleasing to see both Ashley on My Girl, and Brittany on Guns and Roses, in the line-up for Champion and Reserve Champion ASH Hack - Ashley and My Girl were awarded Reserve Champion after riding off against some very talented horses and riders.

Pictures will be added when available.
