Silverthorn My Girl - ASHS 2013 Prince of Wales Trophy Winner

My Girl joined the very elite Australian Stock Horse Society Hall of Fame Roll of Honour, when it was announced that she was the 2013 Prince of Wales Perpetual Trophy winner at the ASHS Annual General Meeting in Penrith last Saturday.

The Prince of Wales Perpetual Trophy is awarded annually in recognition of an Australian stock horse that has achieved a number of prestigious performance awards and the best performed in three event categories in a calendar year.

This will be one of the highlights in our lives and one that will remain with us forever. We covered many miles competing at Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra royal shows as well as Youth, State, and National shows during 2013, hoping to gain enough performance to be able to nominate our lovely little mare ridden by our very capable Ashley Whiting.

Horsemanship Clinic at Silverthorn - 21st and 22nd of June, 2014

What a wonderful weekend this was - 25 keen riders participating each day.

We were fortunate to have Kempsey cutting trainer Gary LeBrocq here to coach as well as Paul with assistants Brittany and Ashley.

Our aim was to keep everyone on the move and engaged, so people were divided into two separate and changing groups - as their turn with each coach was complete, they then moved out of that group to join the second coach.

Our undercover arena was designated for Gary who went through a series of drills to relax and focus the horse prior to competition. He then proceeded to the great teaching and training tool - the mechanical cow. On the second day, herd and fencework with cattle. His sessions were very popular and everyone felt that they had gained a lot useful information to advance their horses on cattle either for campdraft, cutting or team penning.

Meanwhile Paul, Ashley and Brittany spent time with their groups in the outdoor campdraft/work arena working on flatwork focusing on the importance of lateral flexion in order to achieve softness and balance in all paces including stops, turns and flying changes.

Although cold at night, the days were fine enabling everyone to get the fullest value of their time over the weekend here at Silverthorn. The campfires blazing in the evening kept those who stayed overnight close - amazing how the flames and warmth can draw a crowd! Our morning tea times and meals are always social, enabling everyone to enjoy our homemade treats and to have a chance to mingle - it's always pleasing to watch people from all walks of life chatting and enjoying themselves. Thank you too to the people who brought along cakes, slices or bakes to add to our table.

2nd Annual All Breeds Foal and Youngstock Show, Salt Ash - 15th June, 2014

Attending this show was our last chance to compete the fillies Silverthorn Guns and Roses and Amaranda Joyfull (Pony) as three-year-olds in their breed classes.

Feeling the full force of winter, we found ourselves bracing the cold winds that were blowing across Alexander Sports Ground at Salt Ash on a reasonably fine day, with a shower of rain later in the day.

Brittany competed on Guns and Roses in ANSA and ASHS classes under judge Michelle Pennie. She won the led ANSA filly class and also took out first in her led ASHS filly class. She went on to take out Champion Led Australian Stock Horse and won ANSA/TB/WB/Stock Horse ridden class and later at the end of the day, won Best 3YO Ridden Exhibit of the Show.

Under judges Michelle Pennie and Andrew Thorek, Ashley competed on our Australian Pony Stud Book filly Amaranda Joyfull placing second in her led APSB class; and first in a very strong filly class, then reserve champion in the Part Welsh ring. This combination were also awarded firsts in APSB and Part Welsh classes under saddle.

Very pleasing results on a very cold day.

7th June, 2014

Ashley enjoyed her week away to Hobart, Tasmania last week to attend the ASHLA Annual General Meeting.

After the meeting when awards were presented, we were pleased to learn that Ashley and Silverthorn My Girl won two major awards -

2013 High Point Junior of the Year as well as ASH Hack High Point Winner 2013.

Congratulations Ashley for your performances on My Girl during 2013 - it was a fabulous year and one on which that we all enjoyed the ride!

For Gloucester Branch ASHS at Gloucester Showground, Paul held a one day clinic concentrating on working patterns that will be used in the upcoming Stock Horse Challenges on June 29, August 3, and September 13. Seventeen riders participated on this very warm sunny winter's day, successfully getting their patterns perfected. The day was pleasantly paused for morning tea and a sausage sizzle at lunch break. Nice to get the opportunity to chat with members.

Paul brought along our newly broken-in, not yet two-years-old colt, Silverthorn Man O War. "Mannie" is chestnut and by Conductor from Cee Dee Destiny, who is an Acres Destiny mare. We were very pleased with the way this colt behaved on his first day out - we are planning to do futurities with this fellow. Brittany assisted Paul on the day, bringing along Silverthorn Guns and Roses, our three-year-old Shotgun filly for the outing.

Over the past two weeks we have had Dungog High School work experience students giving us a helping hand. On the first week we hosted Grace Maher and the second Rowena Dillon. Both girls proved to be capable and willing workers and we enjoyed their company in our home and on the job.

We've just had feedback from Jenni and Tash Yeo who attended Coona Expo recently. They took along their gelding Silverthorn Cattle Call as a last minute replacement when their main competition horse became lame. He didn't disappoint, despite the pouring rain, placed 3rd in the Warrumbungle Way, 7th in the working horse, and 10th in combined training. Well done Tash, looking forward to hearing more about you and Cattle Call.
