General News

This update is well and truly overdue, so much happens here – hard to keep the news flowing as it happens.

Back in late October we lost Silverthorn Danni Girl (full sister to Silverthorn My Girl) after complications post foaling. She left us with a very pretty, tiny black filly by Crillee Amarillo Oak. Silverthorn Material Girl, now aged 11 weeks old, has been bucket reared since four days old. Although very time consuming with four hourly feeds (initially day and night but now only daily), the effort is surely worthwhile. Now at almost three months old her progress has been very pleasing and only recently we have put her out during the day in the company of our gentle big gelding Jugaby who has been helping her learn to socialise.

Over the past few months, several of our young horses have been sold and have gone to their new homes.

The four-year-old bay gelding Smoke Out (Silverthorn Eclipse x St Ronan Abdul Smoke) went to second time buyer, Tash Yeo. Eclipse is one of our best performed and producing mares and we are looking forward to watching “Smoko’s” progress with the Yeo family.

The pretty black two-year-old filly Silverthorn Spider Lily (Montcalm Julie x Silverthorn Easy Acres) was born during Ashley Whiting’s time with us. Ashley always loved this filly and it gave us great pleasure to give this filly to Ashley as her 2012 annual bonus horse.

Silverthorn Lilac Time (Rosebrook Mona x Silverthorn Shotgun) has gone to Georgie Felton. Lilac had been shown lightly with success, and we look forward to seeing this lovely filly out with Georgie this year in the yearling ASH classes this year.

Barsham Sunlast (Barsham Whoosh x Haydon Easy Sun), dam of Silverthorn Oakwood, Silverthorn Sundae, and Silverthorn Gunsmith was sold in foal to Silverthorn Shotgun to Maree Hirst of Huntingdon, NSW. A very good broodmare who will continue on, breeding quality foals.

Silverthorn Coalminer (Silverthorn Belladonna x Silverthorn Easy Acres), a black typey two-year-old gelding sold to Phil Craft of Cessnock.

Silverthorn Sundae (Barsham Sunlast x Silverthorn Shotgun) was sold to second time buyers Erin and Chris Bell at Barmedman, NSW.

There aren’t many days that go by at Silverthorn when we are visitor free. Either we have clients coming to see how their horses are going either in their breaking-in or training programme; people coming in for coaching to improve their own riding skills; others dropping off or picking up mares that have been visiting our stallions; or days that we share with other trainers/friends trading techniques and sharing training ideas. That’s provided we are not off to a show or campdraft to campaign and promote our own stock or holding our monthly horsemanship clinics.

We had a really productive day in December with Bruce Snape and Kylie Blanch when we brought cattle in for a day’s session working cattle as well as spending time with the mechanical cow. This was followed in January with a coaching day with Grace Cooper and Tanya Duncan.

We travelled to Nowendoc Campdraft in November taking Knights Jugaby and Silverthorn Easy Acres. Although the heat was extreme, everyone enjoyed their two days away doing something other than showing. Although not placed, Nathan was pleased with the way both Jugaby and Easy went both in the camp and on the course. Brittany had a run on Jugaby in the ladies campdraft completing the course and placing fifth from 130 entries.

We have some lovely young horses in for breaking-in and training. Stun Gun, Man O War, Jack Sparrow and Bellbird are now in training; Jubilee and Stetson just completing their breaking-in; and Water Lily, Goldsworth Delta Destiny, Sapphire, Gunsmith, Top Gun, Graphite, and Glamour Shot just about to be started. Watch the sale page for updates and photos of their progress.
